Newt Cartoon Dump

Since it looks like Newt Gingrich is not long for this campaign, moneyman Sheldon Adelson having pulled the plug, I thought I’d post these Newt-toons while people remember who he is, which will likely not be the case in six months.

Olbermann Now Definitely Out at Current TV

Time to take the question mark off of my post of Jan. 13, 2012, “Is Olbermann Out at Current TV?” Keith’s been fired, apparently for not playing nice with Al Gore and the rest of Current management. Here’s the ‘letter to viewers’ Current released after the announcement of Olbermann’s firing:

“We created Current to give voice to those Americans who refuse to rely on corporate-controlled media and are seeking an authentic progressive outlet. We are more committed to those goals today than ever before. Current was also founded on the values of respect, openness, collegiality, and loyalty to our viewers. Unfortunately these values are no longer reflected in our relationship with Keith Olbermann and we have ended it.”

While at the fledgling progressive network, Keith Olbermann never demonstrated any lack of respect to his audience, but obviously has shown disdain for the college boys in the head office at Current who apparently haven’t treated him very ‘collegially.’  Olbermann is suing Current and we’ll have to see how that shakes out.  In a lengthy tweet on his departure and proposed lawsuit, Keith ended with:

“In due course, the truth of the ethics of Mr. Gore and Mr. [Joel] Hyatt will come out. For now, it is important only to again acknowledge that joining them was a sincere and well-intentioned gesture on my part, but in retrospect a foolish one. That lack of judgment is mine and mine alone, and I apologize again for it.”

Current TV, in its profound wisdom (joke), has replaced Olbermann’s “Countdown” with ‘Viewpoint with Eliot Spitzer’ which premiered yesterday. Perhaps they can land Kathleen Parker to co-host and score the ratings bonanza CNN had with the pair. (That’s also a joke.) I have nothing against Spitzer, but he’s not a TV guy, he’s a politician and, if not for that — ahemoverblown dalliance with a prostitute (which I don’t care about), he’d still be governor of New York and possibly prosecuting some of the Wall Street swindlers who lit a bonfire under the ‘Hookergate’ story to be rid of Spitzer.

Speaking of Olbermann’s effectiveness as a host and his ego, my opinion hasn’t changed since the Jan. 13th article (and excuse me for quoting myself):

“This is where a firebreather like Olbermann keeps the show moving; he’s opinionated, fearless, and articulate and funny enough to make his what he has to say worth hearing. It’s doubtlessly true that he’s something of an egotistical prima donna, but then, you’d have to be to hold forth for an hour each weekday night and maintain an audience as Keith has all these years. Many minor sins can be forgiven (by me anyway) because he’s reasonably honest, doggedly professional, and seems to care deeply about what he’s putting on the air, despite occasional excursions down Pomposity Lane. Such people often do not play well with others, but they don’t waste your time with a shoddy finished product, either.”

Speaking of Olbermann’s future, I’ll also stick with what I wrote last winter:

“… we’ll just have to look for him [Olbermannn] elsewhere and don’t discount another tour of duty at CNN — every combination CNN has stuck into the 7:pm [Central] time slot has been an abysmal, embarrassing ratings stinkbomb, including the present scrap of scat, “OutFront” with prissy Wall Street fembot Erin Burnett. The simple fact is, CNN is on more cable boxes than Current or MSNBC and Olbermann might relish giving his nemesis at Fox News, Bill O’Reilly, a real challenge in the ratings. (I have no doubt Keith would have blowhard Billo on the ropes in a month.) The only question is: would tepidly right-leaning CNN management put up with Olbermann, and vice versa, in return for that kind of ratings bonanza in prime time? Stay tuned…”

Of course, it’s also possible Keith is tired of TV and wants to move on to something else. He has enough fame as a media ‘enfant terrible’ and should have enough money from his various contracts to give him some room to move. Current TV has made a major mistake by canning Olbermann; Cenk and the Young Turks are okay, but on too early; Spitzer will prove to be a bust, and Gore’s good buddy Jennifer Granholm is nearly unwatchable, leaving Current with a flat prime-time schedule when compared with rival MSNBC. Bill Press in the morning is a welcome alternative to the lukewarm “Morning Joe” brew, as is the hilarious Stephanie Miller, but both programs just air the hosts doing their daily radio shows which isn’t exactly what you’d call ‘stirring optics.’ If Current ever expects to compete with MSNBC or Fox News, Al Gore and the rest of his executive-suite fraternity may have to step aside and let someone who knows what they’re doing program the network.  Oh, and drop all the cheapo SWAT team programming that conflicts with the alleged progressive mission of Current. Show reruns of “Mystery Science Theater 3000” or anything by Robert Smigel instead.

Surprise! Trayvon Martin Was Just a Regular Teenage Kid

I’d like the high school records of some of these right-wing smear merchants, currently honing their skills trying to posthumously destroy the character of Trayvon Martin, subjected to the same scrutiny as they’ve used on Trayvon’s teenage years, cut short by a bullet from George Zimmerman’s 9mm. Sure, Trayvon had a tattoo, maybe smoked some pot, swore, occasionally got into a minor jam at school, all pretty standard for a 17-year-old boy these days. That said, this kid the right-wing is trying so desperately to spin into some kind of stereotypical ‘gangsta thug’ was never arrested for anything, and he had good grades despite a few school suspensions. Meanwhile, we have George Zimmerman, apparently a Dirty Harry wannabe with an arrest record of violent confrontations whom even some supporters describe as ‘overzealous’ in his self-appointed neighborhood watch ‘captaincy’; an ignoble man who has people out lying for him, telling tall tales of a vicious, bloody, life-threatening attack by Trayvon Martin that included a broken nose and battered skull that we now know is utter bullcrap, debunked by the police video filmed less than an hour after he murdered Trayvon Martin. But you won’t hear the righties questioning Zimmerman’s questionable adult record — apparently he’s okay because he killed one of ‘them.’

Surprise! Trayvon Martin Was a Normal Teenage Boy (And the Danger of Seeking a “Perfect Victim”)

Jill Filipovic

March 29, 2012

He used bad words! He maybe smoked pot! He was suspended from school for “truancy” and for being late a lot! He quoted rap lyrics on his Twitter account! Given these revelations, it was clearly ok for an armed stranger to stalk him on the street and shoot him in the chest, right?

Here’s the thing about most people: We are not perfect. Very few of us would make perfect victims. But certain classes of people are given the benefit of the doubt more than others; they’re considered more trustworthy, more deserving of living a victimization-free life. Certain classes of people will have their pasts, or perceived imperfect behavior, brought up to explain why they really aren’t victims, even when that past has no bearing on the particular crime at hand.

Black men are rarely “good” victims.

It sounds like Trayvon Martin was a pretty average teenager. He liked some offensive rap lyrics. He might have smoked pot. He engaged in a few minor acts of delinquency. Sounds pretty much like me and everyone I knew in high school.

The video below is a worthy effort by these college students but, sadly, most white Republicans would look at them and see them as suspicious, just for having darker skin, hoodie or not.

OWS U.N. Protestors in New York Show Imagination

This is the way to do it, outwit them — imagine a crowd of OWS protestors dressed in suits and ties, with the women wearing dresses or business attire. And imagine the images of the police busting people dressed like that. It would make right-wing heads explode, and make a subtle point as well. We’ll see if this catches on.

Clever OWS Activists Get Police to Arrest the Bankers in Suits

Byan Farrell

March 28, 2012

Sometimes justice requires a little imagination. On Saturday, when much of the Occupy Wall Street movement in New York was loudly denouncing police violence against minorities and protesters, a small group of environmentalists dreamed up a way to get the police to focus on the crimes of the 1 percent, to the point of arresting five corporate suits on United Nations property.

Granted, those five were actually members of the OWS affinity group Disrupt Dirty Power, which used Saturday’s action (billed as a “mock’upation”) to launch a month of actions targeting the “corrupt partnership between Wall Street, politicians and the business of pollution.” Police officers seemed thrown for a loop as they tore down tents bearing corporate logos and cuffed people who claimed to be from Bank of America and ExxonMobil. Compared to the rowdy anti-NYPD march earlier that afternoon, this time, the cops had more of a chance to think about what side they’re really on.

Today’s Music: Paul Butterfield, “Born in Chicago” Two-Fer

There was a time in the ‘60s and early ‘70s when every self-respecting young white blues-rock guitarist was required to know two tunes, “Louie, Louie” and “Born in Chicago.” The Paul Butterfield Blues Band was a fairly big name back then, as was Butterfield himself, and rightfully so: They had bridged the slight gap between gritty Southside Chicago electric blues and the British blues-rock of the Rolling Stones, et al, with their eponymously-named 1965 Elektra album, and introduced blues-jazz fusion to a rock audience with their incredible 1966 album, “East/West”. To many young blues-rock musicians today, Paul Butterfield is as remote a name as Beethoven — they’ve vaguely heard of him, but not his music. A shame — ‘the more you know, the better you blow,’ as an old sax player once put it. Read up on Butterfield here while you listen to two different versions of “Born in Chicago”.

Zimmerman’s Self-Defense Alibi Collapses with Release of Police Video

Here are videos of George Zimmerman in police custody shortly after killing Trayvon Martin with his 9mm pistol last February. His ‘friends’ and an alleged Sanford, Fla., police leak have said Zimmerman was viciously attacked by Trayvon who supposedly punched him in the face, broke his nose, banged his head several times on the sidewalk, and left grass stains on the back of his red jacket. Look closely at these two videos (the second one is a little clearer): does Zimmerman look like he has been in a fight? No broken nose, no wounds or scrapes on the back of his head, no blood on his shirt front and, unless the cops stopped by a laundry so he could wash his jacket, no grass stains. In fact, he has no bruises or any other indications that he was beaten. For the last week, his lawyer and his ‘friends’ like the mysterious Joe Oliver (who’s paying Oliver since he quit his TV job to support Zimmerman in the media?) have spread these false stories, endlessly echoed by the right-wing media machine. The videos don’t lie — Zimmerman was obviously not assaulted by anyone the night of the shooting. This should be enough for the DOJ to arrest Zimmerman for perpetrating a hate crime. Let’s see what happens.

Same video from The Daily Beast:

As any lawyer knows, if you can’t make a good case on the facts, you attack the character of the witnesses. The bare facts are that George Zimmerman, ignoring police advice, left his car armed with a pistol and shot an unarmed Trayvon Martin dead. In this case, the ‘witness’ is dead, so the wingnuts attack his character posthumously to try and convince any future jury that the never-arrested Trayvon Martin was some kind of gangsta thug, and the smearing continues. They are so desperate, the righties in the blogosphere have been circulating this fake pic, a photo that apparently originated with the white racist Stormfront site.

The photo on the right is NOT Trayvon Martin. Read on:

Finally, a little background on Zimmerman:
