Breaking News: Zimmerman’s Lawyers Quit Case

Supposedly, George Zimmerman’s defense attorneys quit his case because he won’t return their calls. Okay, that’s one thing, but let’s read between the lines: what if they were promised Zimmerman had evidence that he was beaten on the night he shot Trayvon Martin and he couldn’t produce that evidence? And then there’s a new witness who has emerged claiming they saw what happened and it was Zimmerman, not Trayvon, who was on top and the Sanford Police ignored this witness’ testimony. Zimmerman’s lawyers also said he called special prosecutor Angela Corey against their instructions. This case has more twists and turns than a Hitchcock film, but it seems Corey may be forced by circumstances to try and arrest Zimmerman — unless he’s left the country by the time she gets around to it.

Zimmerman’s Attorneys Quit

UPI
April 10, 2012

SANFORD, Fla., April 10 (UPI) — Lawyers for a Florida man claiming self-defense in the shooting death of an unarmed teenager backed out of the case Tuesday, saying he won’t return their calls.

The Miami Herald reported attorneys Craig Sonner and Hal Uhrig said they had lost touch with George Zimmerman, who has been in hiding since Trayvon Martin was killed, and Zimmerman had begun making moves without talking to them first.

Martin was shot and killed by the 28-year-old crime-watch volunteer in a gated community in Sanford Feb. 26 as the 17-year-old was walking to the home of his father’s girlfriend from a convenience store.

Zimmerman, who is white, told police he shot the black teen in self-defense, invoking Florida’s so-called stand-your-ground law.

The lawyers, who had only a verbal agreement with their client, said Zimmerman made unilateral decisions to call special prosecutor Angela Corey and Fox News talk show host Sean Hannity.

“He won’t even give me a collect call,” Sonner told the Herald.

Santorum Suspends Death March to Nowhere

Finally acceding to the inescapable reality of mathematics, and the likelihood that he would be again badly whomped in his home state of Pennsylvania, the Man Who Would Be America’s Presidential Pope, Rick Santorum, is suspending his futile and demented campaign for the presidency today, according to the New York Times and other news sources. Some have floated the idea that Santorum would be a good VP pick for Romney to placate the angry Christopublicans, but I wouldn’t bet on it. This boy is babbling-kook crazy and even Romney knows that — he’d scare away more voters than he’d attract. Politically, this is the end of the line for St. Santy and his peculiar uber-Catholic variety of theocratic Republicanism. A cozy berth at the Heritage Foundation or Focus on the Family awaits.

Santorum to Suspend Presidential Campaign

by Michael D. Shear and Jim Rutenberg
The New York Times
April 10, 2012

Rick Santorum is suspending his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination on Tuesday, according two of his advisers, bowing to the inevitability of Mitt Romney’s nomination and ending his improbable, come-from-behind quest to become the party’s conservative standard-bearer in the fall.

Mr. Santorum is due to make the announcement at a stop in his home state of Pennsylvania after a weekend in which he tended to his three-year-old daughter, Bella, who had been hospitalized with pneumonia.

The decision abruptly ends his quest for the Republican presidential nomination after weeks in which he has struggled to compete with Mr. Romney’s well-financed, highly-organized campaign apparatus.

Make the Republican War on Women Disappear with GOP Frau-Brau

Cartoons: What GOP War on Women?

Oh, that GOP War on Women…

1. Guess who’s going to lose this ‘balancing act’?

2. Look under ‘clueless Republican tool’ in the dictionary.

3. Republicans want to privatize everything — except your privates.

4. ‘How dare you protest what we say we’re not doing but actually are? Call out the Guard!’

5. You have to assume the GOP base must be wavering for the Republicans to risk pissing off most women with their bizarre anti-women’s rights laws. Either that or they’re on heavy drugs. Or, a conspiracy theory, the GOP Elite want to lose big in 2012 so that they can wrest control of the party from the Christopublican nutcases.

6. But we all know that this only cuts one way; Rush Limbaugh will never lose his Viagra, no matter whose name the prescription is in.

7. This about sums it up.  The GOP doesn’t want Big Gov’t making decisions about your personal life — except in matters relating to a woman’s reproductive organs or sex, of course — but see nothing wrong in your boss at work making decisions about your personal life without interference.  It’s not complicated, it’s completely insane.

Video: Oscar the Cat Opening the Freezer Door for Fish Sticks

Just for fun, here’s a clever cat named Oscar who has figured out how to open the freezer door and get at the tasty fish sticks inside. Hint: don’t watch this with your kitty in the room, if you have one — no reason to give them ideas. For that matter, best make sure the dog doesn’t see it either.

UK Lobbyists Plan to Hijack ‘People’s Petitions’

If it’s in the UK, it will be coming here next, you can bet on it. Note that the lobbyists are violating British law by doing this; will David Cameron’s Tory (conservative) government enforce the law, or pull a Bush and ignore it?

Revealed: lobbyists’ plans to hijack ‘people’s petitions’

Bell Pottinger memo offers to help clients shape EU law – despite ban on business involvement

by Kevin Rawlinson
The Independent (UK)
April 10, 2012

Two of Britain’s largest lobbying firms have launched bids to help big business exploit the European Citizens’ Initiative – a new programme that was meant to involve ordinary people in EU law-making, The Independent has learned.

A leaked memo shows that Bell Pottinger, the subject of an undercover investigation published in this newspaper in December last year, has offered to help potential clients set up petitions demanding changes to EU law under the new programme, whose rules specifically bar organisations from doing so.

And information posted on the website of its fellow lobbyist Fleishman-Hillard shows it too is offering to help businesses hijack the initiative, which came into force on 1 April.

“They are trying to muscle in. We have done everything we can to try to put safeguards in place to discourage that from happening,” said an aide to Maros Sefcovic, the European Commission’s vice-president, who is responsible for setting up the initiative.

The revelations will put more pressure on David Cameron to take action over lobbying firms based in Britain. In February 2010, he made a speech warning that lobbying in Westminster was “an issue that exposes the far-too-cosy relationship between politics, government, business and money”.

Plans to introduce a register of lobbyists, potentially forcing firms to reveal client lists, were announced by the Government in its Coalition Agreement. A consultation, due to close this week, will look at who will be compelled to sign. But, under the current terms set out by the UK Public Affairs Council, companies based in Britain but lobbying in Brussels are not defined as lobbyists. Tamasin Cave, director of SpinWatch and leader of the Alliance for Lobbying Transparency, said: “Professional lobbyists already have such disproportionate access to Brussels. If they are seeking to use the European Citizens’ Initiative [ECI] to gain more influence, it does not seem to be in its spirit; it almost seems greedy for them to try to muscle in.

Florida Prosecutor in Trayvon Martin Murder Trying to Run Out the Clock

Florida’s Republican a-hole Medicare-fraud Gov. Rick Scott appointed Angela Corey as a ‘special prosecutor’ to determine if charges should be brought in the Trayvon Martin murder. Corey then announced she would send the evidence to a grand jury, until today. It must have dawned on Corey that there is now enough public evidence to bring several charges against Trayvon’s shooter George Zimmerman, including homicide in the first degree, so she backed off. No grand jury, but her ‘investigation’ will continue, which likely means she’s trying to run out the clock until mainstream media attention dwindles and then will decide not to arrest and prosecute Zimmerman. Why would Corey do this? First, Republicans have an interest — the deep pockets of the NRA — in protecting ‘Stand Your Ground’ laws — a charge and conviction in the Trayvon Martin case might lead to a public demand for eliminating or changing those laws. Next, the state prosecutor who refused to charge Zimmerman around the time of Trayvon’s killing, even though the lead detective wanted manslaughter charges, and the Sanford Police’s conveniently ‘sloppy’ record of racism in the handling of the shooting deaths of black people, might spark federal investigations which would lead into the offices of prominent Republicans who have been condoning and covering up this kind of institutional racism for years and Corey can’t have that. Third, the Republicans would take a hit from their own crapshit crazy base if it seemed they were ‘caving’ on this issue — the GOP base doesn’t think Zimmerman did anything wrong by killing one of ‘them,’ and are furiously defending him. That means many might stay home from the polls next November or, worse, support a third party if Corey indicts Zimmerman. The question is: Are we going to let Florida get away with this rank injustice? If Corey can’t use the evidence already released to the public to arrest Zimmerman, let’s demand a prosecutor who isn’t so cozy with the governor and the GOP to conduct the investigation.

Special prosecutor will not use grand jury in Trayvon Martin investigation

CNN.com
April 9, 2012

State Attorney Angela Corey, appointed as a special prosecutor in the February shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, has decided against sending the case to a grand jury, her office said Monday.

“The decision should not be considered a factor in the final determination of the case,” Corey’s office said in a statement.

The grand jury, set to convene on Tuesday, was previously scheduled by the former prosecutor.

Corey previously said she has not used grand jury’s in cases like this and added that from the time she was appointed she said she may not need a grand jury.

The decision about whether or not to charge George Zimmerman in the case now rests with prosecutors.

“At this time, the investigation continues and there will be no further comment from this office,” in the statement.

The decision means that the timetable for any possible charges remains up in the air.
