Video: Mitt Romney Defines ‘Work’ for Poor Mothers

Turns out Mitt doesn’t think taking care of a child is real work with, you know, ‘dignity.’ That only applies to privileged wealthy mothers like his wife Ann who has never had a job outside the home in her life and had plenty of household help, perhaps supplied by other mothers enjoying the ‘dignity’ of cleaning up after the Romney’s five sons. In Mitt’s upper-crust universe, Ann Romney has a ‘choice’ of whether or not to work outside the home; those afflicted with poverty are afforded no such choice. BTW, notice he says, “I’m willing to spend more” for poor mothers to appreciate the “dignity of work” at some soul-killing, dead-on-your-feet minimum wage job — hint to Mitt: you weren’t spending more of your own money, that would be the taxpayers of Massachusetts you served as Governor that spent more, but an interesting Freudian slip of what Romney thinks of handling the public treasury. Here he is, cluelessly blabbering Romneyan nonsense in New Hampshire last January:

A Real Working Mother Asks Ann Romney for Advice

A beautifully-written and incisive message to Ann Romney by Ruth A. Lopez, via Think Progress.org:

Dear Mrs. Romney,

Perhaps you can advise me since you have raised 5 boys, I’m sure you’ll understand. One of the kids is sick again and I have no sick days left at work. In fact, my boss gave me a bad performance review and no raise this year because he said I obviously don’t care that much about my job since I’ve missed so many days and if I miss anymore he may have to replace me. Whenever my child gets sick, my boss reminds me how easily I can be replaced.

We don’t have health insurance at my job, so, if my boy gets worse, I’ll probably be at the ER most of the night tonight. Not for the first time, but that’s ok, he’ll get care. It’s tomorrow I’m worried about.

As you know, regular day care will not take a sick child, so if I want to work when my child is sick, I have to pay for sick child day care, which costs as much as I make, and, as I’m sure you know from personal experience, I still have to pay my regular day care, whether my child is there or out sick, so I actually lose money in order to work while he’s sick. It’s that or take a chance on losing my job entirely.

Should I take my child to the day care for sick kids and lose money and not have enough for my bills this month, so I can keep my job, or should I stay home with my sick child and hope that I don’t get fired?

What did you do when this happened to you?

Weird Pix for April 16, 2012

1. The epitome of weird; a large woman naked save for a transparent rain slicker and white boots, rambling around in an empty parking lot. This has to be a metaphor for something, but what?

2. Okay, so where else can you wear your ‘Italian prick shorts’ and get away with it except Walmart?

3. If only…

4. No doubt photoshopped, but a sentiment some spouses have upon entering the ‘great by-and-by’:

5. A new ad for C-Span’s Book TV?

Today’s Music: Freddie King Two-Fer, “Tore Down” and “Hideaway”

The lesser known of the three Blues Kings, B.B. and Albert being the other two, Freddie King passed away at the young age of 42 in 1976, but had, and continues to have, a tremendous impact on blues and rock guitarists, especially through his instrumentals like “Hideaway” (see below). He was also a great raw blues belter, and here he is at his best doing one of his set-list regulars, “Tore Down.”

The IRS also announced a number of improvements to help make this tax season easy for taxpayers. This includes new navigation features and helpful information on IRS.gov and a new pilot to allow taxpayers to use interactive video to get help with tax issues.
