Today’s Quotes: Abandoned Long Ago

[Note: Of course, the Einstein quote is not real, but I liked the sentiment.]

Weird Pix for June 2, 2012

1. A weird but real typo, somehow apt considering LBJ’s fetid history as a horndog. A corrected version with an apology later went out to students, parents and alumni, but the hilarious damage had been done.

2. More distress for penis packers.

3. Perhaps it was a tad chilly out.

4. A voice on the radio said the USA ranks below the top ten in health care, except in a single category: we are No. 1 in elective plastic surgery. Wave that foam finger you’ve had surgically attached to your wrist!

5. A vital part of any sensible diet, especially for law enforcement.

6. A sign from Romney campaign headquarters perhaps?

Today’s Music: Birthday Toast to Charlie Watts

Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts was born today in 1941 and has the distinction of being the first rock drummer to start a hit record using the cowbell (“Honky Tonk Woman”). Charlie is also a fine jazz drummer, as the second video below will attest.

And here he is playing “Boogie Woogie” (the music starts about halfway in at 3:30):

An anecdote about Charlie Watts, from Wikipedia:

“A famous anecdote relates that during the mid-1980s, an intoxicated Jagger phoned Watts’ hotel room in the middle of the night asking ‘Where’s my drummer?’ Watts reportedly got up, shaved, dressed in a suit, put on a tie and freshly shined shoes, descended the stairs, and punched Jagger in the face, saying: ‘Don’t ever call me your drummer again. You’re my fucking singer!’ “

Cartoons: Has Ex-Republican NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg Gone Completely Off the Rails?

The man who thought nothing of sending in the police to crack some OWS heads last year is apparently trying to set up some kind of Health Food Store By The Hudson in New York City, at least for aging yuppies. He’s banned trans-fat in restaurant food, smoking indoors and outdoors, and now this cockamamie attempt to ban any soft drink that comes in a container larger than 16 ounces. (Does he now plan to establish a NY Soda Police Unit?) Has it escaped Bloomberg’s notice that, while he’s wasting time and money on these peculiar vanity projects, NYC still has a pockets of desperate poverty; that the schools need fixing; that the streets need cleaning; that crime still exists? New Yorkers can only hope that this dimbulb billionaire doesn’t try to buy himself a fourth term as mayor — maybe they can then elect someone who will actually do something useful instead of frittering away time on feel-good publicity stunts.

2. This could be a real billboard.

3. Was the world begging for this? (It’s Godzilla, BTW.)

4. FDR had the same problems Obama has with fringe-right nuts spreading goofy lies, only back in the ’30s, Fox News didn’t exist and right-wingers didn’t dominate radio frequencies.

5. This should be an actual book.

6. Just for fun…

7. Just for more fun.

8. Finally, a great parody of glossy women’s magazines.

Today’s Music: Ron Wood, Now and Then

It’s Ron Wood’s birthday today (1947), so I thought I’d feature a cut from his current band and one from his old band, The Faces with Rod Stewart. First from 2006 at the Beacon Theater in NYC:

And here’s Ron playing with The Faces in 1971:

Today’s Music: ‘Doc’ Watson and Friends, a Random Sampling

Guitar progenitor Arthel Lane “Doc” Watson died May 29, 2012 from complications following colon surgery. He was 89. His influence went far beyond the acoustic bluegrass and country music genres he favored as his picking style and musical sensibility was emulated by other guitarists from folk to rock. Read his bio while you listen to his music. RIP, Doc.
