Composer/conductor Gustav Mahler was born today in 1860 (d. 1911). A sampling of his compositions:

Jazz keyboardist and composer Joe Zawinul was born this day in 1932 (d. 2007). As well as composing the Cannonball Adderly pop hit “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy,” Joe was a major influence on jazz-rock fusion with his bands Weather Report and Syndicate.

Drummer, vocalist and sometime actor Ringo Starr (b. Richard Starkey) first arrived on this beat in 1940. Here’s a sampling of his work with and without The Beatles:

Today’s Music: Bill Haley, Della Reese, Gene Chandler, Nanci Griffith

The first King of Rock ‘n’ Roll — he predated Elvis — Bill Haley was born today in 1925 (d. 1981). In 1953, a year before Elvis Presley was recorded by Sam Phillips at Sun Records in Memphis, Bill Haley and His Comets released and charted the first modern rock tune, “Crazy, Man, Crazy.”

And here’s his biggest hit, “Rock Around the Clock”:

Singer and actress Della Reese met the world for the first time in 1931. In her long career, she has sung gospel, blues, jazz and pop. Here’s a sample:
