Walmart Turns 50

When Sam Walton opened the first Arkansas-based Walmart store in July, 1962, it sold products made in the U.S.A. at prices competitive with foreign manufacturers and it wasn’t a bad idea. But that all changed in the late ’80s when Walmart began featuring items of foreign origin and Sam Walton died in 1992, leaving a vast inheritance to his wacky children. Today, most of Walmart’s shelves are stocked with products from overseas, especially China; they are the world’s largest private employer and have had a raft of lawsuits filed against them for everything from racial and sexual discrimination to unlawful detainment. Sam Walton’s spoiled heirs invest heavily in right-wing Republican politicians and causes that serve the global interest of Walmart Inc. at the expense of America — a long way from the original Walmart concept that tried to foster American jobs and productivity.

Today’s Music: Kenny Burrell, Stanley Jordan

Jazz genius Kenny Burrell was born today in 1931. Although he’s not a household name, those he’s influenced are. I had the pleasure of meeting Kenny years ago — his personality is as great as his guitar playing.

With John Coltrane:

Jazz fusion guitar virtuoso Stanley Jordan was born today in 1959. He’s advanced the ‘two-handed tapping’ percussive technique well beyond the novelty device it once was into a fluid and unique guitar style.

Today’s Music: Buddy Guy, Paul Anka, David Sanborn

Chicago bluesman and international star Buddy Guy was born today in 1936. Happy birthday, Buddy!

Singer/songwriter Paul Anka was born today in 1941. As well as his late ’50s incarnation as a pop star, Paul also wrote tunes made popular by others, such as My Way.

Sax master David Sanborn stepped to the front this date in 1945. There is not enough room here to list all of the musicians and sessions David has played with and on.
