Ford and Renault to Launch New Mini-Car in North America

Phil Proctor at Planet Proctor has revealed that Ford Motors and French auto giant Renault are planning to produce a new mini-car for the American market to compete with the Cooper Mini and other small cars. The ultra-compact vehicle, which will target American women, will be an engineering merger of the reliable Renault Clio and Ford’s popular Taurus brand.

The Ford ‘Clio-Taurus,’ as it’s slated to be called, will initially only be available in pink with a soft top.

A spokeswoman for the new car said Ford is confident the Clio-Taurus will be practically theft-proof, as the average male car thief won’t be able to locate it, much less turn it on.

There have been complaints, however, based on prototype test drives, that the mini regularly leaks transmission fluid monthly, and, as Phil Proctor notes, “can be a real bitch to start in the morning.” Often, you can’t even get it to turn over at all on cold mornings.

Despite those concerns, Ford and Renault expect bang-up sales when the vehicle is released in North America and plan a saturation ad campaign centered around the slogan, “The Clio-Taurus: Once You’ve Handled It, You’ll Never Let Go!”

The Clio-Taurus should be available to the American market in 2013.

What a Waste of Money…

The Iowa 2012 vote will fade into history, a mostly meaningless exercise. Nevertheless, serious money was spent to get the approval of a small number of Christopublicans and Teabaggers; about half of the approximately 100,000 who voted for a Republican. What a waste…

Romney Engaged in Crony Capitalism as Gov. of Massachusetts

People who follow politics know Willard Mitt Romney is the epitome of the “Say Anything to Get Elected” politician, but to start carping about Obama’s alleged ‘crony capitalism’ buries the hypocrisy meter all the way to the right. As Priorities USA Action notes:

“When Romney was Governor of Massachusetts, ‘the state handed out $4.5 million in loans to two firms run by his campaign donors that have since defaulted, leaving taxpayers holding the bag.’

“Romney lured one of the companies to Massachusetts by offering a direct loan from the state and his Administration bragged about using government loans to attract business.”

Today’s Music: Erik Satie

French composer Erik Satie (1866 – 1925) is an acquired taste and either you like him or hate him, but there is no denying his impact on modern music, not only classical, but jazz, as well. His sparse, languid piano compositions, what some refer to as ‘mysterioso’ music, influenced everyone from John Cage to Miles Davis. The first video below, Satie’s “Gnossienne No. 1,” you’ve probably heard in the background of some film or TV show, but it stands alone as a nice piece of music. Try to relax and listen.

And here are Satie’s ‘Trois Gymnopedies,” composed about 1888, and still sounding fresh today:

Today’s Quotes: Eight Crazy Santorum Quotes

It’s a testament to how far right the GOP ship is sinking that a babbling boob like Rick Santorum could get close to the Republican presidential nomination.

Today’s Music: Miles Davis “All Blues”

American jazz has travelled a rocky trajectory from the Ragtime of the early 20th century to ’20s Dixieland to the ’30s Big Band Era to post-war Bebop to ’50s Cool Jazz to late ’60s Fusion to Whatever It Is Now. Along the way rockers attached a caboose to the main engine and picked up on what the jazz guys were laying down.  Miles Davis’ 1959 “Kind of Blue” album was one of those transitional routes, taming the frenetic solo instrumentality of Bebop and unifying it with the Cool Jazz modality of the West Coast, typified by Chet Baker. Many of the young blues players and rockers of the ’60s and ’70s picked up on this New Cool and appropriated it to their own styles before Miles nabbed guitarist John McLaughlin, pianist Chick Corea and saxman Wayne Shorter and forged his own path in Jazz/Rock Fusion with “Bitches Brew” in 1970. Here’s the seminal “All Blues” track from Davis’ landmark “Kind of Blue” featuring John Coltrane on tenor sax, Cannonball Adderley on alto sax, Bill Evans on piano, Jimmy Cobb on drums, and Paul Chambers on bass.

Today’s Music: Two by Coltrane

What’s that? You’ve never heard of sax genius John Coltrane? Learn up here. While you’re reading, listen to Coltrane doing “Freight Trane” in 1958 with one of my favorite guitarists, Kenny Burrell, and the landmark “Giant Steps” in 1959.  BTW, here’s a pencil sketch of ‘Trane’ I did ages ago.

And here’s Coltrane’s classic 1959 jazz instrumental “Giant Steps” which I’m told by horn players that every serious jazz saxophonist must learn.
