Today’s Music: Albert Collins, “I Ain’t Drunk”

The Ice Man definitely cometh here, with Albert Collins bearing down on his humbucked, minor-key-tuned Fender Telecaster with nothin’ but the blues.  I’m glad I got a chance to hear Albert live down on Lincoln Ave. in Chicago before he passed away in 1993.  Every blues/rock guitarist worthy of the name knows Albert’s ‘sting bee’ style and has borrowed some of his technique, and he always put on a good show, even if his backing bands were occasionally uneven. Nothing uneven about this cut, though, as Collins brings it all back home.

Newt Gingrich’s Biggest Problems Illustrated

Aside from his pathological lying and hallucinatory approach to history, of course.

1.  With his attacks on Romney, Newt has turned the Republican debates into a ‘who’s the bigger asshole’ forum. (Stop fighting guys; you’re both right!) It seems President Obama goes up in the polls after every GOP debate and Newt clearly exposes what greedy, nasty hypocritical bastards the Republicans really are. Please keep it up, Newt!

2.  Eventually Republican voters will catch up to how much of a fraud Newt really is — hopefully after he has secured the GOP nomination.

3.  This item is just ugly and lame, using members of his family to attack his ex-wife. Who does something like this, other than Newt?

4.  Then there’s Newtie’s massive, overblown, my-farts-are-rare-perfume ego that will ultimately undo him.  Have no doubt that if he could have, Newt would have disposed of his ex-wives the way King Henry VIII did.

Today’s Music: Kim Wilson and The Fabulous Thunderbirds

Here’s Kim Wilson, the guy Muddy Waters once called the ‘greatest harmonica player since Little Walter,’ tearing it up with his band The Fabulous Thunderbirds which once included Stevie Ray Vaughn’s older brother Jimmie on guitar, playing some of their lesser-known tunes. Watch for the harp virtuoso solo on the last video — you don’t hear many musicians who can hold a show like that.

Today’s Music: ‘Chitlin’s Con Carne’ by Kenny Burrell

This is what jazz-blues fusion really sounds like. Smooth with a bite and some soul power.
Kenny Burrell from nearly 50 years ago, and he’s still playing great.

H/T to Mathew Tyler Wilson.

Billionaire Bill Gates Envies Millionaire Mitt Romney?

Every time one of the Great Unwashed starts talking about the inequality of Mitt Romney paying half the tax rate of the average working stiff, you’ll hear some Republican bonehead dismiss it as ‘the politics of envy.’ (No doubt Frank Luntz sat up all night to nail down that catch phrase.) Well, here’s Bill Gates, the richest man in America, and the second richest, Warren Buffett, both saying the wealthy should pay more in taxes. What’s the canned GOP Talking Point for that one, Frank, envy of the wealthy by the wealthier? As President Obama recently said, “I promise you, Bill Gates does not envy the rich.”

Excerpt from Think Progress:

GATES: Well the United States has a huge budget deficit, so taxes are going to have to go up. And I certainly agree that they should go up more on the rich than everyone else. That’s just justice.

BBC HOST: Is that a message you think that works with other people as wealthy as yourself, or is it just a small circle of friends — yourself, Warren Buffet, a few others.

GATES: Well, I hope we can solve that deficit problem with a sense of shared sacrifice — where everybody would feel like they’re doing their part. And right now, I don’t feel like people like myself are paying as much as we should.

H/T to Think Progress for the excerpt and Gates video.
