Blues singer and guitarist Smiley Lewis (real name: Overton Amos Lemons) greeted the world today in 1913 (d. 1966). Although he never achieved the fame of the many he inspired, his music is still covered today.
The Band’s guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Robbie Robertson was born today in 1943. Here are a couple of his more popular compositions.
And here he is keeping up with Eric Clapton:
’80s pop rock sensation Huey Lewis (no relation to Smiley) was born this day in 1950. Although I’m not the biggest Huey Lewis and the News fan, his tunes are competently-played, catchy, and the lyrics aren’t the usual ‘moon June’ pop dreck. In the mid-’80s you couldn’t sit in a bar for 15 minutes without hearing one of Lewis’ songs come up on the jukebox.
